CANDID
The Snap Shot
- Growing up, I didn't learn to speak English until I was six. Although I was always outgoing, I found it difficult to connect with people.
- Reading fashion magazines and experimenting on my own helped me relate to people, and shaped me into the person I am.
- While I found fashion and beauty invaluable in developing my identity, I was also torn between western and asian beauty ideals.
- The faces I saw didn't reflect the person I was or the journey I traveled.
- That was when I decided to dedicate my life to increasing diversity within the fashion industry.
The Mission
Although diversity has grown in recent years, there is still a long way to go:
- Statistics tell us that only about 27% of models in fashion weeks are minorities, yet around 50% (and growing) of Americans under the age of 18 are minorities.
- I've spent 6+ years in the marketing industry studying trends, and 2+ years in editorials working to communicate these ideas
- Ultimately, I want to increase diversity in the fashion industry, and make it less intimidating for minorities
